If you haven’t been to Edinburgh’s Haymarket quarter for a few years you’ll be staggered by the changes. The area is booming, with the new tram network and impressively revamped Haymarket railway station at the heart of the West End’s renaissance. This dynamic part of the city is the ideal location for the Haymarket Hub – Scotland’s first hotel to offer free smart phones to guests. Handily they can be used inside the hotel and outside to enhance your stay in the Scottish capital.
Edinburgh’s Vibrant West End
Haymarket is a place that I’ve seen really come up in the world. The arrival of the tram network in 2014 has transformed the area with quick, traffic free journeys available around the city and out to the airport. The railway station itself is one of Scotland’s busiest, offering direct access to everywhere from Glasgow and Aberdeen to Inverness. Then there are a flurry of great new pubs, cafes and restaurants in Haymarket, as investment pours into the area.
A Brilliant Base
I knew the Haymarket Hub under her previous guise as the Tune Hotel. Indeed I attended the opening in 2013. I love the hotel’s location, which is well-served by trams, buses and trains. It’s also an easy base from which to strike out and explore Edinburgh’s myriad attractions. Above all the Haymarket Hub offers great value accommodation and everything you need for a comfortable stay. The hotel’s acquisition by the expanding The Edinburgh Collection group has brought things up a level further with their emphasis on it being convenient, contemporary and connected.
The Haymarket Hub boasts 189 comfortable rooms that focus on providing business class on a budget. I mean seriously comfortable as there are Hypnos beds, power showers and a range of designer toiletries. Then there is the quality in-room Entertainment, which lets guests catch up on all the latest news and sports action. The décor meanwhile is bright and breezy, geared towards design conscious millennials, but clean and trim too to appeal to visitors of all ages. Excellent and innovative use is made of the space throughout.
The public areas are also impressive. The welcoming, airy and light reception sets the tone. I appreciate the fact that the hotel sports a Belhaven pub. Platform 5 not only serves excellent Scottish beers and whiskies, but also hearty breakfasts to set you up for a day of business meetings or sightseeing. Another welcome addition is the round the clock Illy Café, with its world class Italian coffee (from one of my favourite Italian cities, Trieste). There are also plenty of USB ports and charging points for mobiles, tablets and laptops.
Free Handy Smart Phones
Charging points are great for the feature that really sets the Haymarket Hub apart from other hotels in Scotland. That is, of course, the glorious complimentary smartphones for every guest. They are no gimmick – you get free data and there is no charge for calls to UK numbers or to 10 key international countries such as Australia, China, India and the USA.
What really strikes me about the Handy smartphones is that you can use them not just at the hotel, but when you are out and about. This transforms your stay in Edinburgh as you can wander around using Google Maps, book restaurants and check out information on the city’s attractions. You can of course use our very own App or the mobile version of our website to help get you around.
If you want a great central place to stay at the heart of one of the most dynamic quarters of Scotland’s capital then the Haymarket Hub fits the bill. Here you can – in their words – connect, explore and recharge. With its contemporary and comfortable rooms The Haymarket Hub appeals to all tastes. It also has the serious bonus of providing guests with smartphones that they can use to keep in touch and to enhance their exploration of the glorious streets of Edinburgh.
