Balgavies Loch (SWT)

Home > Things to See and Do > Attractions > Nature Reserves > Balgavies Loch (SWT)

This delightful loch is surrounded by reedbeds with dense willow and alder carr. In winter it is an important roost for greylag geese with wigeon, pochard, teal, goldeneye and goosander being regularly seen. Over 60 species of breeding birds have been recorded including water rail, great-crested grebe and shoveler. Ospreys are often seen fishing here in summer.

Interesting plants include cowbane, tufted loosestrife and coral root orchid. Hide is open at weekends, otherwise a key is available from Montrose Wildlife Centre, tel: 01674 676336
