Bass Rock

Home > Things to See and Do > Attractions > Nature Reserves > Bass Rock

This massive guano spattered rock, 100 metres high with sheer cliffs on three sides, is just two miles off the East Lothian coast. The island is home to one of the world's largest gannet colonies. Numbers have increased dramatically in recent years. Around 50,000 pairs now breed here with nests spreading out from the cliffs to cover almost every inch of available space. Gannets mate for life, they return to the Bass in the spring laying their eggs in mid May. The young do not leave the nest until August - September.

From 1400 this isolated island was used as a prison, conditions being particularly gruesome for the Covenanters incarcerated there in the late 18th century.
