Birsay Moors (RSPB)

Home > Things to See and Do > Attractions > Nature Reserves > Birsay Moors (RSPB)

The large moorland reserve is one of the best places in Britain to see hen harriers. In early April they perform their spectacular 'sky dancing' displays. In winter there can be good views of the harriers at dusk as they come into a communal roost at Durkadale. Other breeding birds include merlins, short- eared owls, whimbrels, red-throated divers and arctic skuas.

The Hillside road that cuts through the reserve is a good place to see birds. From the hide on Burgar Hill, overlooking Lowrie’s Water, you can get excellent views of red-throated divers during spring and summer.
