The site of this ancient seat of the Dukes of Hamilton was a fortress even in Viking times. The 13th century fortified tower was developed in the 16th century and extended by Cromwell in the 17th century. There is a superb collection of furniture, paintings, porcelain and silver.
The 80 acre woodland garden, specialising in rhododendrons, is one of Europe's finest. The walled garden, dating from 1710, has been restored as a Victorian garden.
The Country Park has waymarked trails, woodlands, waterfalls, gorges, wildlife ponds, a nature room and wildlife garden. Licensed restaurant, gift shop, ranger service with guided walks, plant sales area, and children's adventure playground.
