Falkland Palace & Garden (NTS)

Home > xml: Attractions > Gardens > Falkland Palace & Garden (NTS)

The Royal Palace of Falkland, was the country residence and hunting lodge of eight Stuart monarchs, including Mary, Queen of Scots. Built between 1502 and 1541, the palace is a superb example of Renaissance architecture. It includes the beautiful Chapel Royal. There are fine portraits of the Stuart monarchs and two sets of 17th-century tapestry hangings.

The garden contains three herbaceous borders enclosing a wide lawn with many varieties of shrubs and trees. Here also is the original Royal Tennis Court - the oldest in Britain still in use - built in 1539. Entry to an exhibition on the history of Falkland at the Town Hall is included in admission to the palace.
