Isle of Eigg (SWT)

This green island, often described as ‘The Emerald of the Inner Hebrides’ is rich in wildlife interest. Eigg’s current bird list totals 196 species. Two pairs of golden eagle breed here, as do hen harrier, short eared owl, red-throated diver, Manx shearwater and many seabirds.

The island is well-known for its wildflowers; 12 species of orchid grow here, while alpine-arctic species include the showy moss campion, mountain avens and both purple and yellow saxifrage. The geology of the island is fascinating and it was on the north coast between Laig and Kildonnan that the famous Scottish geologist, Hugh Miller, found plesiosaur fossils in 1844-46.

The SWT warden organises guided walks and can provide information and advice. Visitors can follow six different walking routes.
