Mellerstain House and Garden

Home > xml: Attractions > Gardens > Mellerstain House and Garden

One of Scotlands great Georgian houses, Mellerstain was begun by architect William Adam in 1725 and completed 70 years later by his famous son Robert. The house stands on the site of a 15th Century castle.

The home of the Earl of Haddington, Mellerstain has a superb interior with particularly beautiful ceilings and friezes in the library, music room and drawing room. The superb collection of paintings includes works by van Dyck, Gainsborough and Ramsay.

The Italian-style terraced gardens, with formal beds planted out with floribunda roses and lavender were laid out by Sir Reginald Blomfield in 1905. From the house there is a splendid view out over the gardens to a wooded lake with the Cheviot Hills in the distance.

Shop and tea room.
