Mersehead (RSPB)

This Solway gem includes, saltmarsh (merse), sand flats, dunes, wet grassland and farmland. The reserve is well worth visiting at anytime of year. In autumn large flocks of barnacle geese from Svalbard, off the north coast of Norway, arrive with teal, wigeon and pintail. Breeding birds include lapwings, snipe, curlews, redshanks and barn owls. Otters are often seen.

Excellent for wildflowers. Over 200 species are found here including sea holly and sea spurge.

Visitor centre, with a coastal trail 2.4 miles and shorter wetland trail 1.2 miles with two observation hides.
