Palace of Holyrood House

Home > Things to See and Do > Attractions > Historic Attractions > Castles & Stately Homes > Palace of Holyrood House

The Queen's official residence in Scotland. This baroque palace is closely associated with Scotland's turbulent past.

Mary, Queen of Scots' married Lord Darnley in the Abbey and lived here between 1561 and 1567, witnessing the murder of her private secretary, David Rizzo, in her Outer Chamber.

The State Apartments are open to the public and are reknowned for their fine plasterwork ceilings and magnificient furnishings, including an unrivalled collection of Brussels tapestries. The great gallery is hung with 89 paintings of real and legendary kings of Scotland. Mary, Queen of Scots' rooms include her Bed Chambers, described as the most famous room in Scotland.

The new Queen’s Gallery hosts a programme of changing exhibitions from the Royal Collection.

Palace café, Queen's Gallery shop.
