Pitmedden Garden (NTS)

Home > xml: Attractions > Gardens > Pitmedden Garden (NTS)

The centrepiece of this spectacular property is the Great Garden, originally laid out in 1675 by Sir Alexander Seton, 1st Baronet of Pitmedden. Three of the elaborate formal parterres of the 17th century have been carefully recreated from designs possibly used in the gardens at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh, in 1647. The fourth parterre is a heraldic design based on Sir Alexander's coat of arms.

In the 100-acre estate is the fine Museum of Farming Life, presenting a vivid picture of the days when the horse was the power in front of the plough. There are also attractive herb and wildlife gardens, a visitor centre, tearoom and picnic area.
