The Arched House, in which Thomas Carlyle was born on 4 December 1795, was built by his father and uncle (who were both master masons) in 1791. Carlyle was a great writer and historian and one of the most powerful influences on 19th-century British thought. The interior of the house is furnished to reflect domestic life in his time and has a notable collection of portraits and Carlyle's belongings.
