Fabric of a Nation

Tartan creations by leading designers Vivienne Westwood, Jean Paul Gaultier and Sir Hardy Amies take centre stage at the National Museum of Costume near Dumfries as part of a new exhibition exploring the history of tartan in Scotland.

‘Fabric of a Nation’ traces the origin and development of tartan. National Museums of Scotland, Exhibition Officer, Maureen Barrie said; “Tartan wasn’t originally seen as a symbol of clanship, or indeed as Scotland’s national dress, so this new exhibition provides a fascinating insight into how this enduring fabric developed into a symbol of Scottish identity that is now seen on catwalks across the world.”

The exhibition looks at the 18th century uniform of the Highland Regiments, the use of tartan in the everyday dress of Highland women and how the fabric was romanticised in the 19th century. The role of tartan in the twentieth century is also explored from battle dress to ball gowns by Britain’s best known fashion houses.

‘Fabric of the Nation’ runs from 1 April to 30 October 2007. For more information see National Museum of Costume
