Golf in Ayrshire, Arran & Clyde Valley

Home > Where to Go > Regions > Ayrshire, Arran & the Clyde Valley > Ayrshire, Arran & Clyde Valley - Get Active > Golf

Birthplace of the Open Championship, Ayrshire is classic golfing country, with a wide selection of welcoming courses including two Open Championship venues.

Ayrshire is an obvious choice for a golf tour, with Prestwick, birthplace of the Open Championship and two current Open Championship venues at Troon and Turnberry. But for every major course there are 3 or 4 second tier courses that will delight the club golfer and challenge the pros.

Western Gailes and Glasgow Gailes offer some stunning holes looking over the Clyde Estuaray to the Isle of Arran. Troon's Kilmarnock Barassie is already a firm favourite on the golfing trail but so too should be Belleisle and Troon's trio of municipal courses that are as testing as they are reasonably priced. There are dozens of hidden treasures away from the busy fairways of the coast that any golfer would savour and delight to return to. Take Ballochmyle or Loudoun or Brunston Castle, there are too many to include here but all are top-quality courses that you will add to your definitely-play-again list.

The Isles of Arran and Great Cumbrae are easily accessible from the Ayrshire coast and offer a unique golf package. On Arran the clubs at Shiskine, Lamlash and Brodick form the better tests while the others provide excellent holiday golf. Similarly the 18-hole course of Millport on Great Cumbrae presents peace and quiet along with superb golf.
