Basalt Columns

Home > Where to Go > Regions > Skye & Lochalsh > Skye & Lochalsh - See & Do > Basalt Columns

Between Portree and Staffin, an escarpment runs for almost 20 miles. The cliff has broken away in places to form distinctive landforms at the Quraing and The Storr.

This black basalt cliff is really the edge of a vast and ancient lava flow. The basalt pinnacle of the Old Man of Storr, so conspicuous on the skyline from the main road, has broken way from the cliff. At the Quiraing, the weird formations of cliff, crag and table-like shapes have been formed by the same process - an infinitely slow action of rotational slippage as the rocks beneath give way, the most spectacular of its kind anywhere in Britain.
