Ben Nevis - Britain's Highest Mountain

Home > Where to Go > Regions > Fort William & Lochaber > Highest Mountain

Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain at 1343m, dominates the town of Fort William. From Achintee, in Glen Nevis, a footpath zigzags its way up the steep slopes to the summit.

At the summit are the ruins of a meteorological observatory that was manned day and night from 1883 – 1904. An annex, run by two young ladies, known as the Temperance Hotel, once offered lunch and bed and breakfast.

The main mountain event of the year is the Ben Nevis Race. This takes place on the first Saturday of September each year. The men’s record for the run to the summit and back stands at 1 hour 25 minutes.
