Towns & Villages in Aviemore and the Cairngorms

Home > Where to Go > Regions > Aviemore and the Cairngorms > Aviemore and the Cairngorms - See & Do > Towns & Villages

The communities and little towns of the Cairngorms National Park have a variety of origins – but all welcome visitors and make excellent bases for further exploring.

Grantown on Spey, with its attractive symmetrical streets, is a typical 18th century ‘planned town’. Aviemore developed from a sleepy railway village to a visitor resort, expanding in the 1960s. Newtonmore, by the early 19th century was the ‘new-town on the moor’, Kingussie is another planned settlement, while Carrbridge takes its name from its historic bridge. Boat of Garten is named after the former ‘boat’ or ferry across the River Spey.
