You are never far from a castle in Scotland. Most famous of Scotland's castles is that icon of the nation, Edinburgh Castle. Not far to the west is the royal castle of Stirling, with its palace, great hall and chapel royal, is even more spectacular. The West Highlands boast a series of castles built to guard the seaways. Most prominent among them is Duart on the Isle of Mull, while most photographed is undoubtedly Eilean Donan near Skye. The richest area for castles and tower houses is the North East of Scotland, among its gems are Crathes and Drum. For palatial stately homes the Scottish Borders is the place to go.
