Fishing in Fort William & Lochaber

Home > Where to Go > Regions > Fort William & Lochaber > Fort William & Lochaber - Get Active > Fishing

This is one of Scotland’s big fish areas so if you are looking for a record breaking trout, charr, pike or skate you could do far worse than start your quest in Lochaber. There is lots of first class salmon, trout and sea fishing to be had.

River Fishing
Draining the west end of the Great Glen, the River Lochy is the most famous salmon river in the area and its wide, streamy pools are excellent for fly fishing. Its tributaries the Spean and Roy flow through some dramatic gorges that make fishing interesting to say the least! Source of the River Nevis is the Ben of that name and this small spate stream produces sea trout and salmon during the later months of the season.

Loch Fishing
Arkaig and Lochy are large lochs that offer lots of fishing. Some enormous trout and charr have been caught there. The larger trout are known as ferrox and their diet is mainly other fish, consequently they grow large and 20lb trout are not unknown. Due to escapees from fish farms, Loch Lochy also contains rainbow trout. Other lochs worth mentioning in the area include Lundavra, Treig, Poulary and Inchlaggan.

Sea Angling
The shores around the sea lochs of Lochaber can provide good catches of a variety of species including pollack, cod, mackerel, saithe and large common skate, thornbacks and conger eels. Much of the fishing can be enjoyed from the shore and heavy tackle is not necessary. Ledgering bait is the favoured technique using mussel, mackerel strip and peeler crab as bait. The best locations are Corpach pier, the West End Car Park and Corran Ferry. Excellent sea fishing can be found at Loch Sunart, both from the shore and boat. A number of sea angling charter boats operate.
