The stronghold of Gaelic in Scotland, the language is spoken throughout the Western Isles.
Gaelic was at one time spoken from Caithness in the north of Scotland to Galloway in the south: it was the language of the royal court and the courts of law. Over the last 700 years it has been gradually displaced by English and today only one per cent of Scots speak Gaelic.
The last two decades, nevertheless, have seen something of a renaissance. High-profile Gaelic broadcasting, Gaelic education availability for the very young, plus short and full-time further education courses are some of the more obvious signs of the resurgence of interest in the language.
