Isle of Bute

Home > Where to Go > Regions > Argyll & Bute > Argyll & Bute - See & Do > Argyll & Bute - The Islands of Argyll > Bute

First impressions from the ferry to Rothesay may be of a traditional resort town – but the island of Bute has lots of quiet spots and gentle walks.

A good local museum in Rothesay sets the scene, with Rothesay Castle’s impressive curtain walls dominating the streets nearby. Mount Stuart is the island’s ‘must see’ – an extraordinary gothic creation in an impressive parkland and garden setting.

Ardencraig Gardens and Ascog Fernery are other places for garden-lovers, while visitors will also enjoy peaceful St Blane’s Chapel on the south end of the island.
