Isle of Coll

Home > Where to Go > Regions > Argyll & Bute > Argyll & Bute - See & Do > Argyll & Bute - The Islands of Argyll > Isle of Coll

Coll for corncrakes, fine beaches and machair - another Hebridean destination with its own distinct rhythms of ferry times and a gentle pace.

Not quite so green as its neighbour Tiree, the island has more rock and heather, but is still farmed with a low intensity to suit corncrakes and other birds.

The main centre of population is around Arinagour, near the ferry pier. Historically, Coll is associated with the Macleans, though it was cleared as late as the 1850s to allow settlement by Ayrshire dairy farmers.

Coll was also the inspiration for the fictional island of Struay, as featured in the children’s book series Katie Morag by author Mairi Hedderwick.
