Busy with distilling and farming, Islay has less of a sleepy atmosphere than some – plus there’s great beaches, golf and spectacular overwintering geese.
With ferry links plus scheduled air services, Islay is an easily accessible island. It’s the place to acquire a taste for salty, seaweedy, tangy malt whiskies, with a number of distilleries open to visitors.
The Museum of Islay Life at Port Charlotte gives good background, while the old power-base of the Lords of the Isles, Finlaggan, with its interpretation centre, has great historical significance. The extraordinary 8th-century Kildalton Cross is also worth discovering.
Birdlife galore at Loch Gruinart Reserve, magnificent beaches where seals doze at low tide, and The Machrie a golf course with a high reputation are all part of the island experience.
