From imposing coastal fortresses to the most grand of stately homes there is a wide choice of superb buildings to visit in the Lothians & Borders.
Often invaded by the ‘Auld Enemy’ of England, the Lothians & Borders needed its castles. Here you’ll find some spectacular examples; Tantallon Castle perched on a cliff top overlooking the North Sea and Smailholm sitting on its rocky knoll high in the Border hills. This area also boasts some of the most splendid stately homes in Britain. Floors Castle, near Kelso, is the largest occupied house in Scotland. Equally magnificent is Hopetoun House to the east of Edinburgh.
