Scotland’s most productive salmon and sea trout river system, an amazing variety of loch and river fishing for trout, plentiful coarse fishing and the challenge of bass and mullet in salt water. An angler’s menu does not come much better than this.
Loch Fishing Natural lochs and reservoirs combine to give this area an impressive quantity of first class fishing. There are too many to name but a few examples illustrate the prospects that await visitors. Linlithgow Loch rainbow trout average around 2lbs and specimens of three times that size are not unknown. St Mary’s Loch and Loch of the Lowes may not produce the biggest brown trout in the area but they are lovely places to cast a fly. Beecraigs, Harperrig, Roughrigg, Gladhouse and Clubbiedean are just some of the list of reservoirs providing well organized, quality trout fishing.
River Fishing Tweed is the most famous river in the area. This is Scotland’s most prolific salmon and sea trout river. It enjoys a season from February 1 to November 30, the longest in the country and fresh run fish can be encountered from the opening day until the closing day. During the early and late parts of the season Tweed is fly only, but given the numbers of fish running the river this is not a handicap. Some of the beats are expensive though during the summer months the prices drop and good fishing can be enjoyed at a moderate cost. Several tributaries including Whitadder, Till, Teviot and Ettrick also offer fine fishing. Trout fishing on the rivers is not expensive and the Tweed system has some of the best in the country.
Fisheries To compete with such high quality natural fishing, fisheries in the Lothians and the Borders have some of the best put-and -take venues available offering convenient fishing and almost guaranteed success.
Coarse Fishing The Union Canal has become a great venue for coarse fishermen along its considerable length, it holds perch, roach, pike and several other species in large quantities and there is a number of other specialist coarse fishing ponds and lochs scattered throughout the area. In addition there is lots of superb grayling fishing available on the Tweed and its tributaries.
Sea Angling The Firth of Forth has prolific opportunities for sea angling with its islands, reefs and hard ground where pollack, cod, wrasse, ling and saithe can be found. Lug and rag worms, squid, mussels and mackerel strip are common baits. Artificial lures such as feathers, fluorescent squid and pirks can also be effective. The inshore area between North Berwick & Dunbar is most productive during the summer months and around May Island can produce some superb catches. Mackerel arrive in July and August giving good sport on light tackle. The shores of the Forth are well known for grey mullet and bass fishing, perhaps the two most sporting salt water species in the UK.
