Shop Opening Hours in Scotland

Home > About Scotland > Key Facts > Shop Opening Hours

Generalities
Shops are usually open Monday to Saturday 9.00am – 5.00pm. In towns and cities as well as villages in holiday areas many shops will choose to open on a Sunday. Larger supermarkets usually open longer, some are even open 24 hours.

Many stores remain open until late evening especially during the summer months and in the lead up to Christmas. Some stores operate late opening on Thursday evenings.

Local Holidays
Local holidays vary from town to town across the country. They are publicised in local newspapers in advance. Not every shop may observe them.

Early Closing
Some rural areas still observe an early closing day – usually a Wednesday or a Thursday, when shops close at 1.00pm.

Sunday
On the islands of Lewis, Harris and North Uist all shops are closed on Sundays.
