Portree, the island capital, is a busy little town built around a sheltered natural harbour between two headlands.
As a local centre, notably busy in the main visitor season, it has a good range of shops and places to eat, as well as a thriving all-year cultural life, boosted by venues such as the arts centre An Tuireann, as well as the Aros Centre with its wide-ranging arts and music programme.
