Sixareens & Hairy Pigs

Home > News > Sixareens & Hairy Pigs

10/06/2007

Scotland’s newest museum and Shetland’s most important new building in over a century has just opened. Reflected in the waters of Hay’s Dock the Shetland Museum is an inspirational place.

Boats abound. Some hang suspended in mid-air, while in a working boatyard a sixareen, a traditional six oared boat, is being restored.

The story of how Shetland, once Danish, came to be part of Scotland is told. There are displays on whaling, on folklore and on the Shetland grice, a breed of pig not unlike a wild boar, that died out in the 1850s.

Shetland is rich in historic sites. Recent excavations have uncovered many exciting items most of which are on display. It is hoped that the extraordinary 9th century hoard of silver bowls and ornaments found on St Ninian’s Isle will soon be returned to Shetland for display in the new museum.
