Both the Cuillins and the peaks at the seaward end of Glen Shiel, known as the Five Sisters, offer a spectacular mountain experience.
One important difference between the two ranges is that most of the Cuillins’ peaks require the use of hands as well as feet to reach them. The 22 Cuillin tops (12 Munros) which exceed the magic 914m are mostly serious rock. The Five Sisters are more of a long hillwalk, and are the best known of the Glen Shiel hills which on the north side of the glen alone offer 11 mountains spread along 20 miles - splendid high-level ridge-walking.
If you want to see the Cuillins at their most dramatic, but without having actually to climb them, then the road through Glen Brittle offers a superb southwards panorama. Alternatively, some rate the view north-west from Elgol over Loch Scavaig towards the south end of the Cuillin ridge as the very finest view in all of Scotland.
