Golf in the Western Isles

Home > Where to Go > Regions > Western Isles > Western Isles - Get Active > Golf

The Western Isles are an inspiring place to play golf with five distinctive courses between the Isle of Lewis in the north and Barra in the south.

You might be surprised to learn that Old Tom Morris, responsible for much of the development of golf in St Andrews, the birth of the Open championship at Prestwick and many other golfing key notes, traversed the Minch to assist in developing golf in the Hebrides.

Askernish on the Isle of South Uist is his design and the course remains much as he laid it out more than 100 years ago. Along with Askernish there are four other ‘official’ courses strung along this chain of islands and a great way to tackle them is to take the Hebridean Golf Challenge to play all 5 within a week.

Golf on the Hebrides is not, of course, of international standard so again it is the ambience and the novelty that make it special. For sheer freshness and excitement as well as unbelievably beautiful backdrops, any of the courses will satisfy.
