Kinneff Old Kirk
Kinneff Kirk, rebuilt in 1738, is famous for having been the hiding place of the 'Honours of Scotland'; the crown, sceptre and sword. Smuggled out of Dunnottar Castle during Cromwell's siege of 1651, they were buried inside the church.

Mortlach Parish Kirk
Built on one of the earliest Christian sites in North-East Scotland, Mortlach dates from the 13th century. There are two interesting Pictish stones, one within the church and one in the kirkyard.

St Mary's Church (Monymusk)
Originally an Augustinian Priory, established by the Earl of Mar in 1170, St Mary's was sensitively restored in 1929. The church shelters the 'Monymusk Stone', a fine Pictish symbol stone.

St Ninian's Church
This low, unassuming building is the oldest, post Reformation Roman Catholic church in Scotland. It was built in 1755, a time when Catholics were far from popular.

St Machar's Cathedral
This handsome fortress church of the Bishops of Aberdeen was mostly built in the 15th century. Now only half its original length, the cathedral has a magnificent heraldic timber ceiling, completed in 1591.

St Mary's Kirk (Auchindoir) (HS)
The former parish church of Auchindoir, St Mary's was built in the late 13th century. It has exceptionally fine doorways.

Elgin Cathedral (HS) 4 out of 5 stars
Elgin Cathedral, Moray
The superb remains of a majestic and beautiful 13th century cathedral, almost destroyed in 1390 by Alexander Stewart, the infamous 'Wolf of Badenoch'.

Pluscarden Abbey 2 out of 5 stars
Founded in 1230, Pluscarden fell into disrepair after the Reformation. It was bought by the Catholic Marquis of Bute in 1897 and has been gradually restored. It is now a flourishing Benedictine Abbey.
