Crinan Canal
An amazing achievement in its day, the canal opened in 1801. It allows vessels to reach the West Highlands without rounding the treacherous Mull of Kintyre. Good viewing points at Cairnbaan and Crinan Basin.

Campbeltown Cross
Intricately carved, this late 14th century cross is one of the most beautiful in Scotland. Sadly, at the Reformation, the crucifixion and other figures were removed.

Achnabreck Prehistoric Rock Carvings (HS)
Achnabreck Prehistoric Carvings, Lochgilphead
The smooth rocks at Achnabreck have one of the best displays in Britain of cup-and-ring markings. There are other nearby sites with rock carvings at Cairnbaan, Ballygowan and Kirkmichael Glassary.

Within a mile of the village of Kilmartin there are an amazing number of prehistoric sites: standing stones; rock carvings; several massive burial cairns and two intimate stone circles.

Inveraray Cross
Inverary Castle, Argyll
This late 15th century cross once stood in the middle of the Old Town of Inveraray, near where the castle is today. Several carvings, including the crucifix, were removed at the Reformation.

Clachan Bridge
The 'Bridge over the Atlantic', designed by Thomas Telford, was completed in 1791 and links the Island of Seil with the mainland of Argyll.

Tirefour Broch
This most impressive broch stands on a ridge some three miles from the Port Appin ferry landing.

Connel Bridge
This former rail bridge, later converted to road use, enabled the slate from the great quarries of Ballachulish to reach markets in the south. It is the second largest cantilever bridge in Britain.

Hynish
This fascinating collection of buildings, with a pier, dock and signal-tower, was the base from which the Skerryvore Lighthouse was built between 1835 and 1844. Small heritage centre.
