The church is all that remains of a priory established in 1230. Once it would have been part of a group of buildings including cloisters, a monks' dormitory, and a prior's lodging. These all disappeared in the years after the Reformation.
The cathedral of the Bishops of Ross, Fortrose was built between the 13th and early 15th centuries. Only the south aisle of the nave and part of the chapter house survive.
