Fyrish Monument
|
|
Erected around 1783 by General Sir Hector Munro to provide employment in a time of famine, the monument is said to be a copy of the gates of the Indian fortress of Negapatam, captured by Sir Hector.

Edderton Cross-Slab

This handsome Pictish cross-slab has crosses on both sides. Below one is the beautifully carved figure of a man on horseback.

Shandwick Cross-Slab
|
|
An outstanding Pictish monument, on one side is a prominent cross, on the other there are various symbols and scenes including one of a man shooting a crossbow at a stag.

Dun Dornaigil (HS)

|
Still impressive with a section of its outside wall standing to almost 7 metres, it has a fine lintel stone over the blocked entrance.

Grey Cairns of Camster (HS)

|
The two huge neolithic cairns are particularly impressive. One is round with a corbelled central chamber and passage. The other is 70 metres long with two chambers and passages.

Keiss Harbour
|
|
This attractive harbour and its fine slate roofed warehouse were both built in 1831. Beside the warehouse, sunk back into the slope of the cliff, is an old icehouse.

Fleet Mound
|
|
This great embankment was built in 1814 - 1816 to carry the new road across Loch Fleet. The old bridge is fitted with extraordinary flap valves that allow the river out but stop the sea coming in.

Castletown Harbour
|
|
This fine harbour was built in 1824 to serve the nearby quarry. Ships laden with paving stones sailed from here to England and later also to Australia and South America.

Whaligoe Steps and Harbour
|
|
An extraordinary harbour reached by a flight of 330 steps cut into the cliff. Many boats once fished from here, their catches of herring being carried up the steps to the curing station.

More than 22 rows of low slabs arranged in a slightly fan-shaped pattern. They may have been a prehistoric observatory.
