This 12th century church was only discovered in 1851 after the roofs of some houses were stripped off following an outbreak of fever. Eynhallow, or Holy Isle in Old Norse, suggests that there may have been an earlier Celtic monastery on this site.
One of the finest early churches on Orkney. Its 12th century tower was once considerably higher. The Norse Earl, Magnus Erlendsson, prayed here before being murdered by his cousin Earl Hakon.
This magnificent cathedral was dedicated to the Norse Earl, Magnus Erlendsson, murdered in 1116. The cathedral was founded, only 20 years after Magnus's death, by his nephew Earl Rognvald.
