The Bishop's Palace is a 12th century hall-house, with a round tower added in 1541-48. The adjacent Earl's Palace was built between 1600 and 1607.

With a fine ruined Z-plan tower, this impressive castle was built between 1560 and 1574 by Gilbert Balfour, from Fife. It has twin towers and an extraordinary number of gun-loops.

Cubbie Row's Castle (HS)

This Norse castle built in about 1150, is named after its first owner Kolbein (Krubbie) Hruga. A square tower, once three storeys high, its entrance at first floor level, was reached by a ladder.

Balfour Castle
