Bishop's and Earl's Palace (HS) 4 out of 5 stars
The Bishop's Palace is a 12th century hall-house, with a round tower added in 1541-48. The adjacent Earl's Palace was built between 1600 and 1607.

Hackness Martello Tower (HS)
Hackness Martello Tower, Hoy, Orkney
The tower, one of only three Martello Towers in Scotland, was built in 1815 to protect the Longhope anchorage from attacks by American privateers. A 24-pounder cannon was mounted on the roof top gun platform.

An excellent late example of a Scottish watermill, circa 1880, with a 4 metre diameter iron water wheel driving three pairs of millstones on the first floor. Beautifully restored with an interpretive display. Café and shop.

Click Mill, Dounby, Orkney
The last surviving horizontal water mill in Orkney, of type well represented in Shetland and Lewis. In working order. It is the most primitive type of water-powered mill known in Britain, called a "click mill" after the noise it made while running.

Dennis Head Lighthouse
Built in 1789 on North Ronaldsay, this is the oldest lighthouse in the Northern Isles. It ceased operation in 1854 after the completion of the new Dennis Head Lighthouse, the tallest land-based lighthouse in the British Isles.

Italian Chapel 3 out of 5 stars
This delightful chapel was built in 1943-45 by Italian prisoners of war, then working on the Churchill Barriers. It is constructed out of two Nissen huts and is beautifully decorated. Signposted off A961.
