Broch of Gurness (HS)

Churchill Barriers
|
|
The barriers were built in 1941-43 to stop German submarines reaching the British naval base in Scapa Flow. The 66,000 ten ton concrete blocks, used to form the barriers, were made by Italian prisoners of war.

Cuween Hill Chambered Cairn (HS)

|
A magnificent chambered cairn with a beautifully constructed inner chamber containing four side cells. Reached by crawling along a narrow passage. When excavated, the skulls of 24 dogs were found on the floor of the chamber.

This extraordinary tomb has been hollowed out of a solid block of sandstone. Outside the entrance is the original blocking stone. It is the only rock-cut tomb in Britain.

Buried some 2 metres below the ground this well-built earth house has a narrow passage leading to an oval chamber.

Holm of Papa Westray Chambered Cairn (HS)

One of the remotest and most impressive of all the tombs on Orkney. It has a long central chamber containing twelve separate cells. Some of the stones are decorated.

Knap o' Howar (HS)

This well preserved farmstead c 2800 BC - 3700 BC was discovered in the 1930s buried under 4 metres of wind-blown sand. The people who lived here reared cattle and sheep, fished and grew wheat and barley.

Knowe of Yarso Chambered Cairn HS
|
|
|
|
This long stalled cairn, protected by a modern roof, is divided into three compartments. The bones of 29 people were found here, with skulls carefully arranged beside the wall. Among animal remains were the bones of some 36 deer.

The finest megalithic tomb in the British Isles, built in Neolithic times before 2700 BC. Runic inscriptions tell of how it was plundered by the Vikings.

Midhowe Broch (HS)

|
Standing on a promontory and protected by a massive rampart, the broch and its associated buildings are very well-preserved. The main wall still stands to a height of 4.3 metres and many interesting features can be clearly seen.

Protected by a modern structure, this huge tomb, 23 metres in length is divided by upright slabs into twelve compartments. When excavated the remains of 25 people were found.

Quoyness Chambered Cairn (HS)

This outstanding tomb stands on Els Ness peninsula, a site of many burial mounds and smaller cairns. Quoyness has a splendid central chamber with six side cells, and a low entrance passage.

This earth house, in a farm yard, was discovered in 1926 when a threshing machine went through its roof. The large oval chamber and narrow passage are accessed through two hatches in the roof.
