Established by the Vikings, this attractive town with its narrow streets, 12th century cathedral, Bishop's and Earl's Palaces and old town houses has been capital of Orkney for almost 1,000 years.
This historic town developed during the 18th century after it was chosen by the Hudson's Bay Company as a base for provisioning its ships en route to Northern Canada. Many houses along the waterfront have their own storehouses and piers.
