Catpund Steatite Quarries
|
|
Steatite or soapstone is soft and easy to carve into bowls. From prehistoric times onwards vessels of various sizes or shapes were cut out of the rock face here. The quarrying marks can still be clearly seen.

Foula

Loch of Spiggie (RSPB)

This shallow loch attracts large numbers of wildfowl during the autumn and winter, including whooper swans, wigeon and teal. In summer arctic terns, arctic and great skuas can be seen bathing here.

This attractive island, with its famous broch, is the place to see storm petrels. Evening boat trips are arranged. Also good for arctic terns, arctic and great skuas, and common seals.

Muness Castle (HS)

A splendid residence, built in 1598 for the notorious Lawrence Bruce, half-brother of the Earl of Orkney. After being attacked and burned by Danish pirates in 1627, the castle never regained its former splendour.

St Olaf's Church
|
|
Medieval church dating from 12th until 1785. Inside are tombstones of two Dutch merchants from Bremen. The stone for Segebad Detken, who died in 1573, records that he traded in Shetland for 52 years.
