Argyll & Bute Golf - Scottish Highlands
Well known for the two Big Macs, The Machrie and Machrihanish, this region has many lesser known but equally charming courses.
The highlights of this area are undoubtedly The Machrie Golf Course and Hotel on Islay and Machrihanish Golf Club on the west side of the Kintyre Peninsula. These are two stupendous links courses, renowned worldwide with many great names such as Faldo, Hagen, Varden, Braid and more making their way here to pay homage and enjoy their superb settings.
The only draw back might be that, unless you fly which is perfectly feasible, these courses are not the easiest to get to. So it is worth planning to play your way to them or indeed make a holiday itinerary that includes several of this area’s lesser known gems. James Braid’s course at Oban is well worth trying, as are the fine 18-hole courses on the Cowal and Bute peninsulas. There are many excellent 9-hole courses throughout the area, with the added benefit of the delightful villages and scenic backdrops that are so common in this wonderful part of Scotland.
