Road to the Isles - Scotland
Formerly the road from the Isles, used by cattle drovers, the A830 Fort William to Mallaig is a simply stunning drive.
On the way your eye will be drawn at Glenfinnan to the quintessential Highland panorama: narrow Loch Shiel, framed by hills with the Glenfinnan Monument in the foreground. Bonnie Prince Charlie rallied the clans here.
Beyond Arisaig, recently bypassed, are the famous white sands of Morar. Mallaig has shops and accommodation choice, plus a heritage centre and an aquarium. And if driving there does not appeal, then take the train. Both diesel and steam engines operate in summer on this most scenic of Scotland’s railways.
