Lake of Mentieth - Scotland
The Lake of Menteith is the venue of Scotland’s most famous curling match
The ice has to be 10 inches thick if the Grand Match is to be played on the lake between curlers from Highland and Lowland Scotland. The last bonspiel took place here in the winter of 1979 with over a thousand competitors on the ice.
In summer ‘Scotland’s only lake’ is frequented by fisherman and those visiting the peaceful island Priory of Inchmahome – once a refuge for the young Mary Queen of Scots.
