This island, Sand-oy in Norse or sand island, gains its name from its many broad white sandy beaches. A peaceful island 16 miles long, it is a good place to see grey and common seals, and otters. Rich in prehistoric sites it has the largest chambered cairn on Orkney - Quoyness. There are several lochs with trout fishing.
