Shetland Isles Guide to Festivals & Events
From a deep-winter fire festival to celebrations of the musical traditions of the islands, Shetlanders make the most of their heritage in a packed events programme.
Up Helly Aa is Shetland’s spectacular deep-winter fire festival, which each year generates its own warmth and also re-affirms community identity. A spectacular parade in Viking costume, the burning of a Viking galley, as well as much socialising and performing are some of its elements.
A Norse influenced style of fiddle playing has developed into a distinctive Shetland sound which can be heard at numerous musical gatherings, most notably the Shetland Folk Festival and the Accordion and Fiddle Festival.
