One of Shetland’s most fertile islands, Fetlar is well known for its wildlife, especially for the snowy owls that bred here between 1967 and 1974. The RSPB reserve here is one of the best places to see Red-necked Phalarope. The island was the birthplace of Sir William Watson Cheyne, he assisted John Lister in the development of antiseptic surgery and went on to become a famous surgeon. His house, built in 1900, stands next to the excellent Fetlar Interpretive Centre.
