Monach Isles

Lying 5 miles off the coast of North Uist the islands were inhabited for over a thousand years. A nunnery and a monastery were built here in the 13th century. It is said that islands were then linked to the mainland at low tide and that this link was broken by the tsunami of 1607. Well populated in the late 1800s the islands then boasted a schoolhouse and a post office. No one has lived there since 1947.
