A flourishing fishing community with excellent harbours, Scalpay is reached by a bridge from Harris completed in 1998. There is a trail to Eilean Glas lighthouse on the east coast. This was the first lighthouse to be built in the Western Isles. The keepers’ houses, now holiday homes, were built out of Aberdeenshire granite by Robert Louis Stevenson’s grandfather. There is a selection of accommodation on the island.
