Vatersay West Beach
Isle of Barra
A superb beach of white sand with sand-polished gneiss pebbles, it is best known as the site of the wreck of the emigrant ship Anne Jane. Sailing from Liverpool to Montreal she was wrecked off the beach on September 28th 1853. Of the 450 people on board, mostly Irish emigrants, 348 were drowned. They were buried in large pits at the back of the beach where there is a monument to the disaster. The beach is a short walk across the machair from one of several parking areas.
