Abbotsford is the house built and lived in by Sir Walter Scott the famous 19th century author, poet and historian. The building of Abbotsford took six years, and was completed in 1824. William Atkinson was the chosen architect, and George Bulloch gave his advice on the furnishings, while local craftsmen carried out the work. The house contains an impressive collection of historic relics, weapons and armour, (also Rob Roy’s Gun and Montrose’s Sword), and a library containing over 9,000 rare volumes. Visitors see Sir Walter Scott’s Study, Library, Drawing Room, Entrance Hall, Armouries and the Dining Room where he died on 21st September 1832. The gardens, laid over by Sir Walter Scott in the 1820’s, include a walled garden with a handsome orangery, roses, fruit trees and herbaceous borders. Beautiful grounds and woodland walks. Tea room and gift shop.
Opening Times
Open daily between late March and October. Monday to Saturday 9.30am – 5.00pm. Sundays in April, May and October 2.00pm – 5.00pm. Sundays in June, July, August and September 9.30am – 5.00pm. November to March, Monday - Friday by appointment.
